Ocean Fanfare is a richly nuanced, darkly-melodic post-bop quartet.

The music, like it's environmental theme, is post-modern and post-structuralism, taking pieces and parts of post-bop avant-garde with equal measures of lyricism. Let's hope it can stave off the post-apocalypse.

... it must be emphasized that Dabrowski and his cohorts play some fascinating notes together and manage to create tension and continuity, which is superbly executed from start to finish. This music does not allow much space for individual statements, as it is based on close cooperation and constant group improvisation, but from time to time both Dabrowski and Meinild manage to squeeze in breathtaking soli, which of course are of hair-raising quality.

Meinild’s «Hjemmefødsel» and Dąbrowski’s «Importance of Madness» and «Cordovan» emphasizes the telepathic manners sketch by both to suggest lyrical yet playful statements, propelled by the always imaginative rhythmic work of Brunn and Andersson. On Meinild’s «Klangtræ» both Dąbrowski and Meinild offer the most dramatic, melancholic cry of this album, but Dąbrowski’s following «You Don’t Look Very Cheerful» sounds as an answer to this sad cry and calls for an action.

Now the Ocean Fanfare quartet is full of inspiration with a strong and modern sound, prudent harmony and subtle balancing between melodic, lyrical and melancholy. By building new sounds and associations, the musicians are conservatively stable in their improvisations, as if humbly assigning themselves to the proposed concepts. Thus, the image of interesting, modern jazz appears, where improvisation - although the main one - is only an impulse for building the sound and mood.

A characteristic track is the ironically titled "Importance of Madness," which isn't really evocative of insanity at all, but rather a carefully developed, almost chamber-like dialogue between Dabrowski and Meinild that is augmented by the fine layer of support offered by Andersson and Bruun.

About First Nature

Ocean Fanfare has started the recordings of Third Nature, an album trilogi. The first chapter is called First Nature will be release on Barefoot Records April 4 2019. Charged with the acoustic sound of the freejazz quartet, it pays tribute to biodiversity. The wild growing interplay balances the lyrical and the melancholic.

In the next two years we will dive into economic theory, effect pedals, programming, graphic scores, spontaneous composition and much more.

Owing a big thanks to Anna Tsing’s book ‘The Mushroom at the end of the world’ the albums is entitled:

Third Nature - Temporal polyphony (2021)

Ocean Fanfare released the ‘Imagine Sound, Imagine Silence’ in 2014 with Tyshawn Sorey behind the drums.
